Restorative sleep is not the same as eight hours.

Thermostat set low in a quiet bedroom at first light, curtains still drawn

You can sleep nine hours and still wake tired. Here is why. Restorative sleep is the deep stage, not the total minutes. Most adults need 1.5 to 2 hours of it. Most adults get less.

The biggest determinant is the temperature of your bedroom in the last hour of sleep. Cool wins. The second biggest is whether you ate after 20:00. The third is alcohol.

If you cannot change all three, change the first. Drop the room temperature by 2 degrees. You will see it in the data the next morning.

“The room you sleep in matters more than the hours you sleep in it.”

Set the room cooler tonight. Eat lighter at dinner. Skip the second glass. Notice the difference on day three.
