Route

How the trail goes.

An early start trail. The first stretch climbs to a sunrise viewpoint that opens onto the plains, framed by the Himalayan foothills. The path then moves through tea gardens and into forest. Several clear streams mark the descent towards Shiva Khola river. The Lord Shiva Mandir sits in the forest near the river. Pilgrims and hikers stop at the same shrine for the same reason. The descent passes through the Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary.

Highlights

What stays with you.

  • Sunrise viewpoint in the first hour. Plains below, foothills above.
  • Tea gardens with the morning fragrance of fresh leaves.
  • Stream crossings on the descent. Cool water, places to rest.
  • The Shiva Mandir in the forest. A pause that belongs on the trail, not after it.
  • Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary on the way down. Birdlife, butterflies, the chance of larger mammals.
